Unsheltered in Phoenix: One Man’s Inspiring Story
CTC Newsroom: Meet Our Patients,Patient Journeys
The holiday season often highlights the harsh realities of homelessness in Phoenix. But there is also hope, as seen in Rob’s uplifting story.
After a difficult medical journey, Rob recently secured housing thanks to the support of Circle the City. His story sheds light on issues like lack of affordable housing, respite care needs, isolation, and the power of community.
The Beginning of Rob’s Journey
Rob, a man in his 60s, faced grim circumstances last Christmas when he was evicted right before the holidays. An ensuing medical crisis led to hospitalization. Despite being too sick to recover on the streets, Rob was discharged without stable housing.
Finding Respite Care
Many unsheltered patients are caught in this gap – too healthy to occupy a hospital bed but too sick to heal without one. Respite centers like Circle the City’s fill this void. Rob stayed at our Midtown Medical Respite Center to recover.
The Long Road to Housing
Upon release from Circle the City’s respite care, Rob still lacked housing. He resorted to living in a van outside our clinic with his dog, Bernie. Months later, a CTC patient navigator helped Rob secure a housing voucher. He began working on his health and social needs.
Hope and Healing Through Community
With Circle the City’s support, Rob recently achieved enormous wins – a new job and his own apartment. Rob’s holiday story shows the hardship unsheltered Phoenicians face and the power of community, hope, and healing.
